| Was this the offseason that leads to the Chargers' first Super Bowl title?
Hard to say before the calendar hits July, but the team is upbeat over a number issues after completing its OTAs.
The team is in much better shape—medically—than it was last offseason. Many key players who had their fingers crossed they would be ready for the 2008 season opener were out running for this offsesason's work. In particular, quarterback Philip Rivers wasn't worried about his mended knee. Center Nick Hardwick wasn't rubbing a sore foot. Tight end Antonio Gates wasn't moving gingerly on a tender toe. Chargers' camp will be closed to public
|
|
A summertime tradition for thousands of Chargers fans will be interrupted this year when the team closes its training camp to the public due to safety concerns at Chargers Park. Replacement of a drainage pipe that burst in February and caused significant damage to the team's Murphy Canyon facility is not scheduled to begin until at least later this month and is expected to take two to three months to complete.

Chargers pull plug on talks with Chula Vista

The Chargers' courtship of Chula Vista as the site for a new football stadium has ended quietly, 3½ years after it began. With a note. Chargers special counsel Mark Fabiani posted a message on the team's Web site Wednesday saying its Chula Vista efforts are on hold because of long-known complications involving a power plant on the 130-acre bayfront site under consideration.

Hughes signs 4-year deal with Chargers

| The San Diego Chargers have signed fifth-round draft pick Brandon Hughes to a four-year deal. Hughes, a cornerback from Oregon State, is the first member of the 2009 draft class to sign. He played for former Chargers coach Mike Riley and finished his college career with 178 tackles and three interceptions. |
